Unbox the Room takes a simple idea and turns it into a quiet puzzle about growing up. Instead of following conversations or reading long blocks of story, players unpack boxes after eight different house moves, stretching from 1997 to 2018. Each new room offers another little glimpse into the life of the woman living there.
Every Object Has Somewhere to Go
Clothes, books, toys, kitchenware, photographs, and countless everyday possessions need to be placed around each home. Some fit neatly into drawers or cupboards, while others belong on desks, shelves, beds, or floors. Rotating awkwardly shaped objects can become a puzzle of its own when space is limited.
There is no score to chase and no clock pushing things along. The relaxed pace lets players experiment with different arrangements while gradually clearing each box from the room.
Look Closely at What Remains
The real story sits inside the belongings. A childhood bedroom eventually gives way to college housing, shared apartments, relationships, and finally a home that feels truly personal. Certain objects return years later, while others quietly vanish. Even something as small as a familiar pink pig plushie can reveal that a part of childhood has followed the protagonist through several stages of life.
A Puzzle With a Personal Touch
Unbox the Room combines gentle organization with environmental storytelling. Objects generally have sensible places, and misplaced items can signal that something needs changing before a move is complete. Players who simply want to decorate can also disable placement restrictions.
There are no dramatic speeches or complicated objectives here. The rooms, possessions, and changes between them do the storytelling, leaving players to connect the pieces themselves.
